Stories from the Wurundjeri
Fall 2015
At Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia, I am working on a “mobile first” digital storytelling application for a web design class. I decided to use this prompt as an opportunity to immerse myself in Australian history and design a storytelling application for the local Aboriginal clan, the Wurundjeri. The process for this project involved extensive contextual and secondary research, consultations with the head of Aboriginal studies at Swinburne, and discussions with other Wurunderji people. The solution is an application that enables Wurunderji elders to share sound clips of the Dreamtime stories and people to share and save those stories. The next phase of this project involves in depth user testing and coding and developing the application.
The Dreamtime stories are part of Aboriginal oral history and spirituality. With Indigenous people only making up 4% of the population in Australia, the Dreamtime stories are in danger of being forgotten. For more information on the potential implications of this project, please contact me.
